Control Room 42 – or CR42 is a new approach to creating flexible, easy-to-use and universal media production rooms adapted to media convergence. Traditional equipment is replaced by a universal and fully programmable graphical interface adapted to the user.
The user can then focus on production with an intuitive, user-friendly and infinitely configurable tool.
CR42 was born out of RTBF’s desire to reinvent its working methods by taking advantage of the latest technological developments on the eve of the construction of its new Mediasquare production facility. CR42 symbolizes the digital transformation of broadcast production.

Automation and manual control are combined in the same ecosystem shared between users, allowing the construction of complex scenarios specific to each production while maintaining the improvisation capabilities essential to news production.
Audio, video, live graphics, lighting, interactive sets, virtual reality: all these elements are integrated and controllable within a customizable single paradigm.

All the core processing of CR42 is done by real-time software, including SMODE running on standard servers. This removes the need to renew expensive dedicated equipment that requires complex learning.
SMODE's real time and versatile approach allows a new approach to creation where a graphic designer can modify in real-time all the graphical aspects of a production, and observe the result immediately in the control room or on a virtual double of the set.

"Nous étions à la recherche d'une solution graphique en temps réel qui unifierait plusieurs besoins et innoverait dans la production de médias pour la régie universelle de la RTBF. De l'habillage des décors avec de multiples écrans vidéo, aux réseaux de LED, à la réalité augmentée et aux studios virtuels, SMODE nous permet d'avoir une nouvelle approche créative, efficace et immédiate."

SMODE was first validated in the broadcast environment, by conducting several Hackatons on live stream processing, position tracking, text rendering, etc.
Today, SMODE is in production in a studio in Mons (Belgium), and in the prototype of future production studios. SMODE also allows to develop a more efficient, creative and immediate approach to graphic design.
