The Dior Addict-Roppongi in Tokyo was an artistic installation using large-scale projections onto sculptural lipstick models to create a striking visual experience.
The project combined projection, generative visuals, and scenography, with content created by SMODE Japan in close collaboration with Ely Bessis, Designer and Artist. Ely, who worked as a consultant for Dior on immersive installations and interactive setups, was tasked with finding a solution to activate the space and bring energy to it.
Ely was introduced to SMODE through a recommendation from a friend who had used the software for a theatre show in Belgium. He had been searching for a way to seamlessly combine animation and video mapping, and SMODE was the solution he needed. This was Ely’s first time using SMODE, and he was impressed with its ability to handle both animation and video mapping together efficiently.

SMODE was chosen for its ability to manage complex video mapping and provide flexibility in adjusting the physical setup of the installation. Ely opted for SMODE because it could handle the intricate video mapping required for the project, while also simplifying the physical setup. The ability to prepare scenes in advance, animate them, and test the renders before going on-site was crucial. Moreover, once on-site, SMODE allowed for quick adjustments, making it possible to adapt the installation to the real-world conditions without losing valuable time.
In addition to this, the presence of SMODE’s team in Japan was a significant advantage. With a local team available to manage the setup directly, Ely was able to focus on the creative and technical aspects of the project from Paris, without the need to travel for the entire installation process.
The team at SMODE Japan created a custom workflow tailored to the project’s needs. This workflow included animating textures (diffuse, roughness, normal, and emissive) within the SMODE timeline, applying them to PBR materials, and controlling the lighting, camera, and object positions. This allowed for precise alignment with the objects, and ensured that the final output was perfectly mapped. SMODE's flexibility enabled them to quickly render previews and make adjustments to the setup, streamlining the communication with the client and speeding up the production process.
Ely was very pleased with the collaboration, mentioning that it was great working with the SMODE team and that Dior was extremely satisfied with the overall result.

"SMODE allowed us to save a lot of time during the creation and preview phases. Being able to work in real time on textures, timings, and effects was a real game-changer. We could fine-tune the installation directly on site, without waiting for renders or going through endless back-and-forths in post-production."
